Brief Culture Introduction to Dragon Boat Festival

We’d love to share this time-honored Chinese tradition with all our global partners.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also named Duanwu Festival or Double Fifth Festival, dates back over 2,000 years, falling on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month every year.

The festival exists mainly to commemorate Qu Yuan, a noble patriotic poet from ancient Chu State. Grieved by the fall of his motherland, he jumped into Miluo River on this day. Local villagers rowed boats to search for him and threw glutinous rice dumplings (Zongzi) into water to stop fish from hurting his body.
These ancient customs have passed down to today:
  • Dragon boat racing: Teams paddle dragon-shaped boats, symbolizing unity and courage
  • Eating Zongzi: Bamboo-leaf wrapped sticky rice dumplings, the signature festival food
  • Hanging mugwort & carrying herbal sachets: Folk rituals to pray for health and ward off summer illnesses
It stands for Chinese spirit of patriotism, harmony and longing for wellbeing.
